Hi all,

Have got a couple of days in Wellington at the end of August - can anyone recommend any decent birding (either terrestrial or seabirds) within 2-3 hours' drive of the city?

There's a predator free island with re-introduced endemics just north of wellington that you can visit called kapiti i believe. I never went myself so am not sure of the logistics or species you can get there but there is a population of little spotted kiwi....
I saw spotted shag in wellington harbour.
The ferry ride to picton was excellent for tubenoses....

I think Kapiti island is only for day visitors.
You have to book a tour before.

Thanks for the advice everyone - I'd heard that this was a good option, and will look into the booking arrangements. Don't suppose there are any decent seawatching promontories on the mainland?

I would definitely look into Kapiti. My wife and I went to Tiritiri in Auckland and it was a fantastic day. You'll see more at Kapiti than you will anywhere else. You need a permit and can easily get one from the DOC. Also, there is a breeding center about an hour north where many of their endangered birds are bred. It is supposed to be very nice as well.
