Unidentified Parrot - Central Valencia, Spain 17th April 2023 (1 Viewer)

I am nowhere on parrot identification. This was a parrot rather than a Parakeet. More robust and squat than accompanying Monk Parakeets. Anyone able to give me a steer? So many different species at large & increasing. The defined red patch on the inner elememt of the upper wing appears to be the most notable feature. I did not really get any other features save for perhaps a narrow paler crown and some narrow reddish areas on the leading edge of the wing. It was a very brief single sighting in flight. I will edit my other pics. There are only one or two at best.

Many thanks

Paul

Hello Paul,

I am far from an expert too, but yours looks like a Yellow-headed Amazon (Amazona oratrix) to me.
Escaped birds has built up a small population in Stuttgart/Germany.
Only one single observation of this species in ebird in the Valencia area (from 2016). It is not lack of coverage, plenty of Monk Parakeet observations.

I agree it is an amazon parrot, but not sure I could id it reliably from this image (no offense intended).

Cheers all. I will edit some pics this afternoon and upload. All three Category C species easy enough to find in Valencia but a whole wealth of other species seen irregularly....

All the best

Now I am curious and confused, what is the deal about sensitive exotics?

Derbyan Parakeet and Sun Parakeet....?
I anticipate CITES or Endangered species that are traded. eBird has an overall sensitive species list which is applied globally. It can cause challenges for reviewers who would prefer to make some local species sensitive sporadically that may only be of local concern rather than a one size fits all approach at times but it is a global database and a fantastic one as it is so a small price to pay and there are workarounds just about.

All the best

Many thanks Daniel, Alexander, Niels & The Fern (how Cryptic - moth humour :) ) - I think between you, you have cracked it with Yellow-crowned Amazon (Parrot). I have three pictures and looking at them, I think that they are all consistent with that identification.

All the best

Paul
