On the River Towy , park in the castle car park. Signposted off the A40 between Carmarthen and Llandeilo.
At the feeding station in the car park, look out for tree sparrows which are seen here regularly amongst the house sparrows, chaffinches, dunnock , greenfinches and members of the tit family. Ravens circle overhead from the castle ramparts, and buzzards are resident.
On the river, look out for concentrations of goosander in late summer, up to 50 birds, (but usually best seen from another bridge about 2 miles upstream at Gelli Aur).
In summer also look out for little ringed plover on the shingle bank 400m south of the car park. (Best viewed from the bridge….scope essential). Plovers and common sandpiper nest here. At the same location, large colony of sand martins nest in the river bank.
Winter, look out for wintering whooper swans on the fields with up to 50 mute swans.
Siskins, bullfinches, linnets, treecreeper, long tailed tit are regular in the trees between the car park and the river. On the hill leading up to the castle, and on the fields adjoining the rivwer, flocks of thrushes, including redwing and fieldfare.
Gelli Aur Country Park nearby is worth visiting in late spring/early summer with large numbers of summer migrants nesting in the woods including pied and spotted flycatcher. Goshawks in the conifers.
