A pair of Steller's Jays have made a nest in a tree next to my house. My partner put a webcam on them: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kKB5Zmc9FLg&feature=youtu.be
While they were building the nest, the two of them always worked together - they would both go out at the same time, and then they would both come back together with material for the nest (almost every time, one of them had a stick and the other had something fluffy). Now that the nest is done, one of the Jays (presumably the female) is in the nest almost all the time, presumably incubating eggs. However, I haven't seen the male in over a week. The first day or two that the female was in the nest, he brought her food a few times, but now he seems to be gone and she leaves the nest every once in a while to get food for herself.
Is this common in Steller's Jays? Or does it seem more likely that the male has met an untimely end?
