Snowies in NYC? (1 Viewer)

Time to brave the cold and see if I can spot a Snowy Owl before they take off back north! Has anyone seen them within NYC? I was going to take a trip out to Floyd Bennett soon, as I haven't been there yet. Any tips greatly appreciated. Having a hard time finding any sightings listed, aside from this article.

Thanks!

My parent's live near Floyd Bennett field still in the house where I grew up. I wasn't into birding until a few years ago unfortunately so I've only birded there once for a short time. If you do see one there, can you post it? It would make a good excuse to go visit mom!

Oh that's perfect, Mike! I looked at the eBird site earlier, but I didn't know that you could make it show specific sites, which is perfect. I was just looking at purple splotches :)
Looks like Jones Beach is the place to go...apparently a Gyrfalcon was spotted nearby as well according to this that I found.

I am a big proponent of eBird, and I encourage everyone to register and enter all their sightings there.

Even if you don't have an eBird account there is a huge amount of information available to you there.

You can access a list of recent reports of rarities by going here, and entering your region of interest in the "Rare Bird Alerts" field and pressing the "View" button.

Good luck on your quest for the Snowy Owl, I just saw my first one a few weeks ago.

Mike

Due to the great weather, headed down to Jones Beach this afternoon and were in fact able to spot the almost pure white snowy male that has set up shop in the dunes!
After trekking out into the dunes for a while on my own, I realized all I had to do was look for the semi-circle of about a dozen photogs with the giant telephoto lens :t:

Thanks for the help!
