I live in Shangahai and I want to visit the Dongtang Reserve on Chonming Island. Ive got a car and I can see how to get to the reserve but I cant find out how to get into it! Ive read you need a permit but cant find out ho wto get one. Can anyone help

tried cnbirder.com?

you might want to check http://www.cnbirder.com/index.asp
For instance, here's a report from dongtan: http://www.cnbirder.com/reportview.asp?id=10111

i tried to send a message to someone on this site regarding that same topic, but their message thing was broken or something...or maybe it only works in Internet Explorer and doesn't like my firefox browser. maybe give it a try? how's your chinese?

also, have you tried Binhai park down in Jinshan? i hear there's some kind of island reserve down there, straight south of shanghai. there are some reports from there on cnbirder as well.

I'm leaving canada on saturday to get to Shanghai on sunday, and i'll be there for a few days before i go down to Hangzhou. Let me know if you're interested in going birding on monday or tuesday. :)

To get a permit of Dongtan is too much fuss.We local birders http://shwbs.org/swb/index.php dont get down to the beach at all.And even u get down to it,birdwatching is quite hard.U just need to stay on the dam or the fish pond inside the dam and wait for the high tides. Thus,u dont need any permit at all.
And Binhai is not at Jinshan but at Nanhui, where I live in.It's better for watching waders than Dongtan, but lacks some other kinds of birds. The three islands in Jinshan are not good for birding.I suggest Yangshan Island in the Hangzhou Bay.U can drive there on the Donghai Bridge.
Migration is almost over, and now going to Hangzhou or Nanjing for summer breeders including Fairy Pitta is a good choice.
There will be an Nanjing Birding trip of Shanghai Wild Bird Society soon.
