The plan includes the development of in-river quays to handle some of the world’s biggest container vessels, currently unable to use the Port of Liverpool. The in-river terminal will require the development of adjacent land currently used by the nature reserve, run by the Lancashire Wildlife Trust.
Nobody at Peel was available to talk about the plan to convert the nature reserve to port use, but the dock firm’s consultation document states: “The development to support the anticipated growth . . . would lead to loss of habitats and features of interest to nature conservation, and will result in an adverse effect on the integrity of the (site).”
The nature reserve’s SSSI status means Peel will have to make a strong case before it will be allowed to develop it.
