I have another challengingly blurry picture, from today -- unfortunately the best one of this bird. Is it possible to ID the wader in front of the preening duck from this? The best I can guess is some kind of sandpiper, but that doesn't get me very far!

Hello Henry,

thanks for the new pictures!

They add much more confidence for me that this is Wood Sandpiper. Impression of upperpart colouration and pattern (yes, hard to be sure) seems better for this than for a Green Sandpiper (and is there a well marked supercillium behind the eye?)

All Ducks are Common Teals imo and I think the hiding bird to the left is a Lapwing (?).
