Pugs - Slender vs Maple. (1 Viewer)

JWN Andrewes

Poor Judge of Pasta.
A few to post here. Have had a few very small Pugs recently, three back on midish July, then a couple over the past week or so.

The July ones I took to be Slender -
Small size
Rounded wings
Greyish colour
Prominent discal spot

First three from 17th July, fourth from 21st July, possibly a recatch.

Then there are a couple of more recent ones that I was thinking Maple

Small size
More pointed wings
Brownish colour
No more than a vague hint of a discal spot

First a 22nd August individual....

.... and one from last night, also, I think, a Maple.

Trouble is, the closest Field Maple that I know of is at the school about half a mile away. I went out looking for more this afternoon, but came up blank, although I can't check the gardens behind us on the other side of the river.

Are there any obvious ID options that I'm overlooking?

I think you'll have to whip their bits off, not many recorders will accept them, (ours definitely wouldn't) whatever they are, without.

Probably right there. I've had Common suggested for the later ones, which looks a fair shout. I'd thought they were on the small side, and possibly the late side, for Common, but that's just my inexperience I guess. Good to keep learning though!

The problem is that sometimes we think we know stuff only to be proved wrong. I know that in some places for example, Lempka's Gold Spot is accepted without dissection. I got one last year which I and at least one other experienced 'mother' here, was sure was one. I caught another Gold Spot on the same night which showed that the putative Lempka's was quite a bit smaller, making me even more confident in fact, our recorder was sufficiently intrigued by it that she agreed to dissect it - guess what, ordinary Gold Spot, I attach it here.

Pugs are a nightmare and unless it's something very obvious, I don't even look at them.
