Sunday bird walk, April 08, 2018:
The Sunday bird walk went to the Nanaimo River Estuary in south Nanaimo. The morning was cloudy with light rain. Two Greater Yellowlegs
flew overhead at the start of the walk. Violet-green Swallows, Tree Swallows and Common Ravens were seen flying above us all morning.
We spotted a Northern Harrier flying low over the fields. An American Kestrel was seen across the river. A Fox Sparrow was singing from a tall bush. A singing Western Meadowlark was perched at the top of a tall bush just off the trail.
Nine birders saw and heard the following thirty-seven species:

Mallard
Bufflehead
Common Merganser
Green-wing Teal
Great Blue Heron
Bald Eagle
Northern Harrier
American Kestrel
Cooper’s Hawk
Greater Yellowlegs
Killdeer
Violet-green Swallow
Tree Swallow

A large raft of Surf Scoters was seen off Neck Point Park in Nanaimo.
Parksville/Qualicum Beach Tuesday Bird Walk, April 03, 2018
The Tuesday bird walk went to Columbia Beach. The morning was cloudy with calm winds. There were a large number of Brant Geese, Pacific Loons and Common Loons not far from shore. Flocks of Greater Scaup, Surf Scoters, White-winged Scoters and Long-tailed Ducks were seen flying up the Strait of Georgia. A pair of Marbled Murrelet were seen far off shore. Black Oystercatchers, Black Turnstones, Killdeer, Black-bellied Plovers and Dunlin were seen close to shore. A House Finch was spotted singing next to the trail. A Fox Sparrow flew in to a bush next to us giving us great views.
Sixteen birders saw and heard the following sixty species:

The Tuesday Bird Walk on April 10, 2018 will be going to Springwood Park in Parksville. Meet at the Parksville Community Park (near the Lions Club playground parking lot) in Parksville at 9:00 am, or at the west end of Despard Avenue at about 9:10 am
The Sunday Bird Walk on April 15, 2018 will be going to the Buttertubs Marsh in Nanaimo. Meet at the Bird store at 9:00 am or at Buttertubs Marsh on the Bowen Road side, at about 9:15 am.
