Nagshead RSPB Pied Flycatchers? (1 Viewer)

I was planning a trip to the Forest of Dean specifically to see Pied Flycatchers at Nagshead RSPB. I was thinking of coming during the May Bank Holiday weekend (5th - 7th) or is that too early. Any suggestions as to the best date to visit would be much appreciated.

Regards

Dave

I would say the 5th to 7th May is just about the best time to visit, the birds certainly will be in, the males singing and in best plumage

We're staying in Monmouth for a week from May 12. Hoping to get a few good days in at Nagshead and the surrounding areas..

There have been sveral birds back on territory for over two weeks in Yorks so I think you'll be fine, Dave. Good luck - wonderful little birds.

Hello Dave

Pied Fly's have been in for a week or so now, you should have no problems seeing them. There are also Redstarts here and there, Wood Warblers should be about as well.

Thanks for the replies.

Although my visit is primarily to see Pied Fly I would also be interested to have any info on Dipper in the area and also if Crossbill can be seen at Tidenham Chase which used to be quoted as a reliable site.

Regards

Dave

There were several Crossbills in a mixed finch flock in the larches below the Goshawk watchpoint at New Fancy View. These were seen best from the path onto a mound NE of the car park which put you at eye level. However, that was six weeks ago and with the breeding season starting may be old hat. Hope others can do better.

Any of the streams in the Monmouth/Wye Valley have Dippers - they breed under many road bridges, eg in Tintern, etc. If need more info, I can add more detail
