Carman 23 June – 5 July
Mosquitoes and rain have curtailed our bird watching somewhat.
We may have seen a Lewis’s Woodpecker this morning, which we think would be a pretty rare sighting for Manitoba.
We didn’t have a camera handy and hope it returns so we get a chance to photograph it.
We are now going through about 2 pounds of mixed seed, 1 pound of black oil seed and about a pound of suet each day. We only fill the mixed seed once a day as the birds empty it in about 4 hours, we then let them eat what they have spilled on the ground. We make our own suet now as it costs about $18 a month; where as the commercial suet was running $60-$100 a month. The birds seem to love it and polish off a pound in about 8 hours.
We had a mamma Downy Woodpecker and two fledglings visiting our feeders last week.
Most of the other birds have been bringing fledglings to the feeders for a few weeks now.
Sightings:
Pine Siskin
Song Sparrow
Robin
Red Winged Blackbird
Blue Jay
Grackle
Brown Headed cowbird
Downy woodpecker
Hairy woodpecker
Yellow Warbler
Yellow Bellied Sapsucker
Brown Thrasher
Oriole
Rock Pigeon
Crow
Gray Catbird
Chipping Sparrow
White Breasted Nuthatch
Stephenfield 2 July
No waterfowl.
Very hot and humid, mosquitoes were pretty bad, insect repellent not terribly effective, likely because we were sweating quite heavily.
Sightings:
Clay Colored Sparrow
Song Sparrow
Robin
Blue Jay
Grackle
Brown Headed Cowbird
Red Winged Blackbird
Downy Woodpecker
Yellow Bellied Sapsucker
Yellow Warbler
Brown Thrasher
Grey Catbird

Lincoln’s Sparrow
Fort Whyte Center 24 June

We observed a group of Grackles chase a Coopers Hawk to the ground, the Hawk then hid in some foliage and eventually took off with the grackles in pursuit.
