John's Mammals 2014 (1 Viewer)

Quick catch-up: haven't seen anything exciting lately but some nice photo-opportunities, principally a Roe Deer at Moor Green and some confiding Brown Hares on the Elmley entrance track. The expression on one made me understand the species' alleged involvement with witchcraft!

The first pic is a hare but aren't the other two rabbits?

I had Monday off so finally made it to Woodwalton Fen where Chinese water deer were very vocal and I had some nice views of a male calling, muntjac, fox and grey squirrel the only other mammals.

Final catch-up of the year, December has been a bit headlong, sorry about that. I'll try to do better next year!

Recently I had a day in Dorset starting with Portland's long-staying Barred Warbler and finishing with missing an Otter at Blandford by a couple of minutes: but at the latter site I had a Grey Squirrel chomping bunches of sycamore keys, which I haven't seen before. It's also uncommon to see a squirrel looking awkward up a tree, but see below!

Back home I was sitting in the Colebrook hide at Moor Green Lakes NR when one of this year's young Roe Deer out on its own swam past and then started learning about thin ice.

Final catch-up Part Two.

Over Christmas I have taken full advantage of the weather. I wanted to see the Trumpeter Swans at Boyton but my chosen day was the day after they weren't reported, so I went to Lakenheath Fen RSPB to wait for news. On the way there I saw a bushy Red Fox run across the road about three cars up from me and then high-tail it across an open frosty field: in the entrance track I found a group of six Roe Deer, and even better while I was sitting in Mere Hide looking at nothing I noticed a flash of white across the pool and found a Weasel hunting the far bank.

I had Rabbits back by the car as I reached it after a scuttle from the centre of the reserve on getting the word the swans were still present, and as I navigated the sea wall on my final run in to see the vagrant pair (ha ha) there was a Common Seal in lovely golden late afternoon sunshine on the muddy far side of the river.

I guess that's it, today I'm just recceing a few local sites ready for tomorrow, probably won't see any more mammals - though you never know....

Happy New Year and a mammal-filled one to everybody!

Topic's been inactive a while. Thought I'd share a couple photos.

First a couple weeks ago some river otters on a pond. Only twice have I seen a wild river otter and got poor photos both times. On the attached, it was a long distance away and I didn't even know what the movement in the water was until I got the photo on the computer. Looks like at least 2 otters. Hard to tell if the darker bump is a 3rd.

The white tail deer is first photo of the year for me.
