Japan tips wanted, Kyoto focus (1 Viewer)

Hi, I'll be living in Japan for one year starting August 2010. I'd appreciate birding suggestions for the Kyoto area, where I'll be living. I'm also interested in any other particular "must see" places. I hope to go to Hokkaido, and other areas are possible.

I paticularly welcome practical tips about places for family travel, including tips on good family lodging and possibly affordable English-language guides.

thanks!:t:

Hi Jeff. You will probably get a better response from the Kantori Yahoo Group. Given the current exchange rate I think you will be in for a HUGE price shock as to how expensive Japan daily life is (especially if you want to maintain any semblance of your US lifestyle!) and travel will be. Nevertheless, Eastern Hokkaido in Jan-Feb is spectacular and I can recommend Pension Poroto. Mark Brazil is the acknowledged English speaking authority on Japan birding and has authored a few books. I am sure he will be easy to contact.

good luck!
Rick
