Hello Mike,
do you have more pictures? My thoughts:

• is it extremly similar to a common Duck/whats the most similar? Yes I agree with you, its similar to a Pochard
• can I detect features of the three usual suspects? Pochard, Tufted Duck, Ferruginous Duck? Your Duck seems to lack an broad black tip at least.
• Your bird seems to have some white on the undertail-coverts
• comparing your bird to pictures here: http://www.orniberlin.de/images/stories/BOA_docs/Entenhybriden.pdf and here https://www.ala-schweiz.ch/images/stories/pdf/ob/2010_107/OrnitholBeob_2010_107_51_Leuzinger.pdf, I think its a Ferruginous Duck x Pochard hybrid.

But better wait for Jörn and others to confirm or correct

Hi Mike,
I saw several times such hybrids in Switzerland, e.g. at Klingnauer Stausee. And I am sure I missed many more, because they look not dissimilar to a Pochard in funny light.
