How many species of owl have you seen (5 Viewers)

I've seen 37 typical owls and three barn owls. All were seen. My most glaring omission is Western Screech Owl. I've never been able to find one, even when I lived out West.

Dave

I've seen just 3. I go birding locally. I don't specifically go searching for owls.

Barred Owl - saw only part of body while perched in a tree. Another day I saw it flying away.

Great Horned Owl - great view perched in a tree; had a good view of it flying on another occasion.

Eastern Screech Owl - saw only top of its head in a Wood Duck box.

Having started the year on 25 species, I have added 24 owl species during the year on eBird taxonomy.

Eleven species added in Costa Rica - Ferruginous Pygmy Owl, Mottled Owl, Costa Rican Pygmy Owl, Tropical Screech Owl, Spectacled Owl, Pacific Screech Owl, Striped Owl*, Middle American Screech Owl, Crested Owl, Central American Pygmy Owl & Black and white Owl.

Three species added in Ontario & Michigan - Eastern Screech Owl, Barred Owl & Northern Saw-whet Owl**.

Three species added in Morocco - Maghreb Owl, Marsh Owl & Pharoah Eagle Owl.

Seven species added in Peru - Koepcke's Screech Owl, Yungas Pygmy Owl, Black-banded Owl**, Rufescent Screech Owl, Rufous-banded Owl, Tawny-bellied Screech Owl & Amazonian Pygmy Owl.

Barn owl, long eared owl, short eared owl, tawny owl and I recently added little owl- hoping add a Scops owl during my next trip to France.

Edit- Added long eared owl as well this year- the Norfolk individual that would regularly perch in front of a optic shop. Sadly, the owl was found dead earlier this year, it's suspected that it died due to a vehicle collision.

here's from what I can think of, probably missed a few, there isn't a better moment in birding than spotlighting an owl. Though Frogmouths and Nightjars are up there with them.

Who's the top, night lister (all night birds,Nightjars,Nighthawks etc) now James, you or Ashley? I wouldn't count that American bloke who ticks them on call alone.

Just the four that are common here, sometimes in summer a pygmy can be heard but never felt the need to twitch that. I hardly ever travel abroad so nothing there. Sure hope a snow owl will pop up again like that one time at Vlieland but I wasn't into birding at that time.

Yungas Pygmy Owl is mis-labelled I think?

Oops. Yes. That's a Tropical Screech Owl. Just goes to show what happens when you get behind with your pics....

I'll find the photo when back from the distractions of a football match. 😀

Edit - I've found a back of a camera from my World Photographic Yearlist thread.

Well...we resurrected hummers, herons, and shorebirds, might as well update this as well!

My list currently stands at 2 Tytonidae and 22 Strigidae. ABA owls in bold

These include:
American Barn Owl (ABA)
African Grass Owl (Kenya)
Northern Boobook (Japan)
Morepork (NZ)
Powerful Owl (Australia)
Elf Owl (ABA)
Northern Saw-whet Owl (ABA)
Burrowing Owl (ABA)

Little Owl (UK)
Ferruginous Pygmy Owl (Panama)
Short-eared Owl (ABA)
Long-eared Owl (ABA)
Eastern Screech-Owl (ABA)

Choco Screech-Owl (Panama)
Western Screech-Owl (ABA)
Whiskered Screech-Owl (ABA)

Spectacled Owl (Panama)
Tawny Owl (UK)
Ural Owl (Japan)
Barred Owl (ABA)
Blakiston's Fish Owl (Japan)
Verreaux's Eagle-Owl (Kenya)
Great Horned Owl (ABA)
Snowy Owl (ABA)

I live something like 8 hours away from Sax-Zim Bog, so there is really no reason why I shouldn't have Great Gray and Northern Hawk-Owl, other than I hate car birding by myself and I hate cold weather birding, and Sax Zim involves both! Not sure what the next owl is...I could get lucky with either of those two species if I put the effort in or maybe even a Boreal Owl, and failing that I might be able to add a few species in Ecuador this summer. Still need Long-eared Owl for my Wisconsin list, so hopefully pick that up this winter.
Oh good...these are back. I now stand at 25 owls, with three new species from Ecuador this past summer, Mottled and both Pacific and Cloud-Forest Pygmy. STILL haven't ventured to Sax Zim bog, but I might have an opportunity this January (would be been more likely if I wasn't on Furlough). Furlough also nukes any plans for Europe this summer, so none of those owls either. Still don't have Long-eared Owl either!

Only 8 owls for me, 7 in my home state of Texas, all seen.
#1 Great Horned Owl
#2 Barred Owl
#3 Eastern Screech Owl
#4 Long-eared Owl
#5 Short-eared Owl
#6 Burrowing Owl
#7 Barn Owl

As well as #8 Ferruginous Pygmy-owl in Mexico. My more memorable short-eared encounter was a bird soaring over the Pihea Valley in Kauai during the day.

I have a whopping five species, four from Ohio:
Great Horned Owl
Barred Owl
Eastern Screech Owl
Short-eared Owl

And one from Washington:
Barn Owl

There are few potential rarities I should eventually get in Ohio, namely Snowy, Northern Saw-whet, and Long-eared.

Switching to IOC taxonomy, I started the Australia & New Zealand trip on 50 and added Australian Masked Owl, Morepok, Sooty Owl, Southern Boobook & Tasmanian Boobook taking me to 55 species.

The additional IOC species is (Eastern) Barn Owl which I had first seen in Thailand and I photographed in Australia.

Not as easy getting new owls and not as easy getting pics!!

All the best

Paul
