Hen Reedbed Reydon Near Southwold Suffolk
The Hen Reedbeds are a relatively new reserve which as already been given SSSI, NNR, RAMSAR, Natura 2000 status. It is a mix of Reedbeds, dykes & pools & is located just north of the Blyth Estuary. There is a nice wide path for disabled access & a steep but rather rough narrow path along the top which overlooks the estuary. I find walking along the path interspersed with visits to the top is worthwhile.
The Reedbeds are situated at Grid ref TM470770 on Landranger Map 156, Parking is located by the A1095 Blythburgh to Southwold road just off Quay Lane. Grid ref TM470771. Please park your car securely & hide all valuables. A small sign posted path to the east will take you to the reserve proper. Beware of traffic as they come round the bends. Many birds are present all year & if coupled with a high tide many of the waders from Spring to Autumn “Hop over the wall” to roost on the scrape. At the end of the walk you will come to a small hide & from here may see Bittern, Snipe & various water birds like Water rail & Passage Waders. You can if so inclined walk the north bank into Southwold or visa versa. The Estuary will produce Little Egret all year & hundreds of wintering wildfowl & waders in winter. It is a little known site with a lot of potential & is always somewhere to go on the way to or from some of the many other birding sites nearby.
