Help with ID? (1 Viewer)

Hey everyone, was out hiking on a trail at a local park (near San Antonio, TX) and saw this strange looking plant. I thought it might be a fungus because I probed it with a stick and it was similar in feel to a mushroom. Any help with IDing this would be appreciated (especially if its not even a fungus..because I can't really tell.) Oh, and it was about the size of a baseball in diameter.
