While travelling to Cornwall down the M5 yesterday, I saw quite a few buzzards over the motorway while passing through Somerset. One pair in particular were quite low over the road between Taunton and Wellington, and one of the pair had a very distinctive red tail, very reminiscent of a North American red-tailed hawk. Otherwise it looked like a typical dark Common Buzzard.
I know Common Buzzards occasionally have red tails, but just wondered if there was any local knowledge of either red-tailed individual CB, escaped RTH associating or breeding with CB, or any other red-tailed raptors around west Somerset?
