Visit these two areas yearly and need suggestions for doing day trips, especially for possibilities of seeing Resplentent or Golden Quetzal. Hummingbirds would be fabulous!

Hi there and a warm welcome to you from those of us on Bird Forum...
We're glad you found us and please join in wherever you like ;)

Are you able to get over to Cozumel to try and spot the Cozumel Emerald? Beautiful little hummingbird. Not sure how far that is from you.

If you wind up going, you're likely to also see a lot of Green-breasted Mangoes.

In Guatemala you can call Rolando at Birding Atitlan expeditions 011 (502) 5736 4134 he can take you to see the Resplendent Quetzal in Santiago de Atitlan.

Thank you! I'm based on Isla Mujeres so Cozumel is definitely doable especially for seeing an endemic hummingbird!

Can you give me any details on places or tours to have the best chance to see them and other Cozumel birds?

This is the tour I took that wound up netting me a Cozumel Emerald and a Cozumel Vireo. Can't recommend this guide enough; he's very enthusiastic about everything, and knows a lot of good places.
The hummingbirds we saw were around a house in the middle of nowhere that had several feeders, and the vireo was at an open-topped cenote that shows up as El Aerolito on the map. Make sure to tell him what you're after, he'll know where to go.

I also saw quite a few birds here, and the tour of the site is interesting, so it may be worth a look.

Where to watch birds in Mexico by Steve Howell gives many great birding sites in the region. It was published in 1999, so is quite old now, but will still be very useful if you can get hold of a copy. Many of the sites are Mayan archeological sites, so easy to visit with non-birders and unlikely to have changed much since the book was published. It is by the author of the main field guide to Mexico.
Biotopo de Quetzal in Guatemala is a good place to see Resplendent Quetzals.
