Hi all,
I will be going to Panama soon, and looked at the Azuero Parakeet, which of course lives on the Azuero Peninsula. Has anyone been to the Peninsula, where will one find good birding spots? how is access, places to stay? we will have a rented 4wd for our trip.

thanks
Niels

Hey Niels,

I would suggest you pick up "Where to find birds in Panama" once you get there. I believe they sell it in park headquarters of the Parque Metropolitano near Panama City. It will give you some ideas on where to go to see the Azuero Parakeet, and how to get there .
For a report on a trip to Cobachon to find this bird, read Jose Garcia's report on http://www.panamaaudubon.org/images/publications/tucan2007_1.pdf (in Spanish, though). Pictures from that trip were posted on www.geocities.com/xenornis, Darien Montanez' site on rare bird sightings in Panama.

I just read Jose's report again, and here's how he describes the trip to Cerro Hoya National Park in Veraguas:

Drive to Tonosi, Los Santos. From there, head to Cambutal, Los Santos. Keep following the road that hugs the coastline until you reach Rio Punta Blanca, about 35 minutes from Cambutal. They left their car there because the road was too bad, and continued on foot along the beach to Cobachon, Veraguas, where they used a local guide called Emilio to go on horseback into the national park.

Hope this helps.

Hello Niels,

I see your interest in the Azuero Parakeet, in the dry season you could get all the way to the small town of Cobachon, there you could rent a horse to go uphill for about 3 hours. It is an adventure to see this parakeet; also you could watch the Great Green Macaw.
