I recently purchased this painted basket-tray at a local antique store. The bird on the left seems like a pretty good representation of a Scarlet Macaw. It is the bird on the right that I am wondering about. It would appear to be a cross between a Hyacinth Macaw and a Sulphur-crested Cockatoo. As far as I know, such a bird does not exist in nature, but two things make me curious about it. One is that it seems odd that the artist should have painted one bird that is a real species and another that is entirely fanciful. The other thing is that I have seen ceramic birds similar to the crested one. Can anyone tell me if such a bird exists outside of the the world of art?
