    Sick Hairy Woodpecker

    Does anyone know what could be wrong with this Hairy Woodpecker? I’m in Massachusetts, so it’s not supposed to have any brownish feathers. We took down this suet feeder in case it has a contagious avian disease, but would like to put the feeder back up if it’s safe to do so. Thank you!

    Several days ago, a female black woodpecker visited my campus. It is an unusual record for a 50 year old pine plantation surrounded by urban areas. The area was steppe and oak shrubland before the pine plantation.

    This large woodpecker swooped over my head while I was filling feeders in my back yard, landing in nearby trees long enough for me to get my camera and take a lot of shots. But the bird seemed a bit nervous about me getting close. I was lucky to get this shot!
