  1. S'no Fun

    S'no Fun

We had some snow in January, which froze and hung around for a bit. An immature Herring Gull landed on my neighbour's shed roof and decided to have a bit of fun. Needless to say, I wasn't expecting this to happen, just my first garden sighting of gulls for the year and wanted a picture to...

Immature Herring or LBBG? Saskatoon - Canada

I can't tell if this is a Herring gull or lesser black backed gull. Dark smudges on upper back, noticably dark eye spot. Please help!

Herring Gull with grey head (aberrant)? (Dutch coast, IJmuiden, July 6th 2023)

This evening I saw this Gull approaching over the beach and dunes. Its dark gray head and breast really stood out even from a large distance, so I ran up a dune to take pictures. Due to the very nice evening sun it's not even that obvious in the pictures, but its head and breast were really...

  13. European Herring Gull

    European Herring Gull

Another shot of the Herring Gull which visited a neighbour's roof in January. The whitish circles on the tiles are lichens, not gull droppings ;)

  16. Riverdancing?

    Riverdancing?

Actually, this is wormdancing. I googled it and discovered that gulls do this "tapdancing" in imitation of the sound of rain on the ground, as an attempt to bring worms up to the surface.

  18. Herring Gull

    Herring Gull

This is a winter visitor to California from breeding grounds in the Arctic. Taxonomy is complex and unsettled. AOS and Clements/eBird retain a traditional arrangement of one species of Herring Gull. H&M4 splits North American populations as a separate species, American or Arctic Herring Gull (L...

    European Herring Gull

I almost missed seeing this bird, having leaned out of the window and looked at the top of the next block, just in case. Since I started digital photography seven years ago, there's only ever been a Carrion Crow there, but on this occasion, there was this whacking great Herring Gull :-) Thank...

Herring Gull or Vega Gull or just an Oly Gull

I was birding around Semiahmoo Spit last weekend (western Washington, close to the Canadian border). Like many of you do, I was photographing birds for later positive ID. I took a picture of this gull, which I assumed was our usual Olympic Gull, a hybrid of GWGU and WEGU. The Olympic Gull is...
