Can we promote groundhog habitat on a small suburban lot? Will the groundhogs come back?

Hello, folks! Since it's Groundhog Day today (at least here in the US), I was wondering if anyone might have advice about something that regards them. When we first moved here, there was a groundhog hibernating in a burrow a close distance to our house. The first year that we lived here, she...
  2. Cammo Cardinal

    Cammo Cardinal

"Cammo" may not be the most accurate description. Not an expert by any means but I might call him a melanistic cardinal for lack of a better term. I felt a bit sorry for him because the other cardinals seemed to be afraid of him. I can only attribute that to his freakish color patterns.

Is it feasible to offer to be a release site for rehabilitated Carolina wrens on a small property?

Hello, folks! I've been planning on preparing suitable habitat for small wildlife in our backyard for quite some time at this point. In particular, I've been trying to attract Carolina wrens. These small birds are common in much of New England. As a species, they seem to have adapted to...

Are otters habitually attracted to outdoor ponds? Do otters invade towns?

Hello folks! I have a question concerning outdoor ponds and otters. We had considered building a pond in our yard for ornamental purposes as well as to attract wildlife. Whether or not we stock the pond with fish is really dependent on the wildlife we intend to attract. Ponds without fish seem...

    painted bunting, female

I haven't been able to get out to the bird parks lately, so it's always good when the painted buntings come to you. This photo doesn't really do this pretty bird justice. If you look closely at this species, the females have many of the same colors of the males, but they are more subtle and...
