    Carpet for ID 09.05.24

I came across this moth yesterday (09/05/24) in woodland just north of Southampton (Hants, UK). I tentatively thought it was a Wood Carpet until I read the section that says it doesn't fly until Jun. so would be grateful for correction Only got the one pic I'm afraid. Thanks

    Carpet Beetle sp? Cyprus

With the caveat that I know little about coleoptera I'm sure its an Anthrenus species but I think you will need to get a more detailed image of the antennae to work out which one. The antenna of verbasci has 11 segments with a club of 3 segments (image attached) while other species have...

    Merlin ID

I've also been trying it in the field and it seems to be accurate for the common UK species. It's picked up a few I wasn't hearing but could do when I turned myself round to point my hearing aids in the right direction.

That's a thought - I think you must be right. I've just tried a few extra species that are on the merlin "able to id" using the Roche recordings stored on computer and played through the computer. The following it identified Lesser Whitethroat Common Chiffchaff Wood Warbler Marsh Tit Reed...

    Merlin ID

I've picked a few tracks where it sounds like a 'bog standard' Iberian Chiffchaff to me, Andy, although that's no guarantee!

    Merlin ID

On this current recording it's suggesting Wren.

    Merlin ID

I'm sitting here on the edge of Southampton in the southern UK running the Merlin app (on android) for which I have the Western Palearctic pack installed. I'm playing a 'standard' Iberian Chiffchaff song from xeno canto and Merlin doesn't recognise it despite Iberian Chiffchaff being a species...

    Large insect Fuerteventura

With the tubercle on the prosternum (top pic if you take the detail out of the shadows) and the very long wings it should be Cyrtacanthacridinae and with a lack of colour in the forewing (although it's a bit difficult to see which wings are showing) I'd have thought Schistocerca gregaria (Desert...

EOS RP with EF 100-400mm lens

I found when using the EOS RP , the adapter and an EF 100mm macro that the focus point would often move off centre (bottom left quite often) even though I had set the touch screen off. As I don't do movies I programmed the Red movie button to set Centre Focus Point.

Leica 8x32 HD vs papilio 6.5 or 8.5x21 For insects and butterflies?

Hi Sam I'm not someone who is very good at analysing why I like a pair of binoculars but I'll try! For birdwatching what I particularly like about the Leica Trinovid HD 8x32 is (1) They are a decent weight (630g) so have a good solid feel in the hands without being overheavy - I struggle with...
