    Bee-eaters in Norfolk, UK

I wonder who will be the first to post these gorgeous birds in our “What did you see …… today?” thread. Such beauty, I envy those who live where these birds can be seen. They must be absolutely breath-taking in life. (when observed through binoculars of appropriate quality, of course)

    Long eyecups?

How do I get a set of longer eyecups for my 8X32 SF?

Direct Comparison of 8X32 NL with 8X32 SF?

Has anyone done this yet? If so ,and if I have missed it, will someone point me toward it? Thank you.

    Venturer LX Manufacture Date

I have a Venturer LX which I am giving to my #2 granddaughter, and I have not found a useful resource to look up the serial number. They are #5022XX and they were my first "really good" binoculars. They are going to a good home and a very excited granddaughter, who is already looking for...

    Pupil Size and IPD

I mentioned that I would report back after my ophthalmologist visit, but I lost track of which thread it was. My pupils dilate to 6 mm at the office, and in response to the specific question "Is that the same as in a dark room?" he replied "It is larger." He did not say how much larger. I am...

    An interesting (?) pairing

Last evening, I went out on an abbreviated version of my usual evening circuit, leaving my 60 mm. Nikon Fieldscope III home, and taking my Fujinon FMT-SX 16X70 instead. I was amazed at how much more the big Fujinons showed , compared to my EL SV 10X42. Of course, they handle somewhat...

    Original Language?

Does anyone have a guess as to what language this was translated from, and by whom? I found it a bit difficult to follow. https://wpa14.wordpress.com/2011/08/13/why-would-you-pick-a-swarovski-binocular/

    Which One?

I want to give my daughter a "decent" pair of binoculars, which she lacks, as I am not especially anxious for her to inherit mine. From reading reviews, it seems to have come down to a choice between the Minox BL HD 8X44, and the Vanguard Endeavor ED II 8X42, or the Nikon Monarch 7 8X42, to...

    What are the Mallards eating?

I have watched Mallards under an oak tree which hangs over a pond, for a number of hours, over a couple of weeks now. I have noticed that when an acorn plops into the water, two or three ducks rush over to the splash, but that's all they do. They then resume paddling around. Other individuals...

    Solo Heron Dance

I just watched a Great Blue Heron (Ardea herodias) perform a little dance, which was not part of a mating ritual, since there were no other herons in the area. This bird is a solitary resident, as far as I can tell. The bird was standing at the edge of a concrete dam, and at first spread its...

    Hummingbird eating bugs.

This afternoon, I got to see a Ruby-Throated Hummingbird, Archilochus colubris eating small gnat-sized, flying insects. The bird approached, and landed briefly on a dead limb, then dropped down and hovered under the branch, while grabbing the insects. My crackpot theory is that the bird used...

    "Our" Turkey Vulture.

We have a very large sugar maple at the edge of woods behind the house. I recently discovered that a Turkey Vulture Cathartes aura has been coming to roost in that tree, most nights. A very impressive bird, indeed, and evidently he (?) thinks he lives here. I doubt if I'll try to feed him.

    Well, they're here.

My glasses were just delivered by FedEx two hours ago. I had only been able to try them, and compare them indoors, so the first outdoor use was a revelation. I sat on a balcony, overlooking my back yard, and looked at everything in sight. Unbeknownst to me, there is a chipmunk living in a...

    Old Noobie from CT

Greetings to all. I am retired, and something of a dabbler in birding, as well as many other hobbies and pursuits. I look forward to participating here, and learning. Cheers! Richard
