Settings for Tascam DR-05 noc migging + USB power

Having experimented with a USB microphone direct in to Audacity I've just taken delivery of a DR-05x & QTX SG300 shotgun. Can anyone help please with basic settings e.g 24 bit WAV, file size, any low frequency cut off etc? Is the QTX best in switch position 1 or 2? Finally can I power the Tascam...

    Tascam DR-05x

Jib - please could you share the basic settings you use for this combo? Sorry for additional Q's but presumably you select OFF for mic power as the QTX has it's own phantom power? Do you just use AA's for the DR05X and if so how long do they run? Does the recorder split files to the micro SD or...

    QTX 300 or 350 shotgun

Has anyone experience of the 350 for nocmigging? It's longer than the 300 so presumably tighter polar pattern? Thanks

    Mist net poles

I've had one private reply, for which I'm grateful and gives me encouragement to persevere with bamboo (gloss painted black every few years). At one of our 'group' sites we actually use 3.6m x 20mm corrugated aluminium poles given to us years ago, they are superb and of course durable.

    Mist net poles

I've been doing some 'gardening' at my sewerage works scrub site and find a number of my time served 12 ft bamboo poles have had it. What are folks using for full sized poles these days? Any suggested sources? thanks Neil

    nikon fieldscope ed82 a

I've had the ED82 A for about 10 years and I also have Swaorvski ATS 80 with zoom on permanent loan .... I prefer the Nikon every time. The zoom at 75x is a little 'dark' and 'tunnel' but the image is pin sharp. If Nikon had manufactured a WA zoom this scope would be near untouchable in the 80mm...

Cryptic Wood White - still on the wing?

Answering my own question, yes. Saw one quite fresh looking CWW at Belfast Harbour this afternoon.

Cryptic Wood White - still on the wing?

I'm in Belfast for the day on Thursday and weather permitting I'd like to see CWW if possible. I appreciate it's getting late and I've missed the peak, but does anyone know if they are still flying and if so any locations with directions in Belfast City please? I have been told of Harbour...

    Song - coastal north Norfolk

I've been on site for an hour again this morning, no sound so far. Thanks for the replies and having listened to recording of Icky that's a match to my ear including what I referred to as 'parakeet' phrases. I ring lots of c Whitethroats & other Sylvias & accros - hadn't considered a hippo, well...

    Song - coastal north Norfolk

I was checking roadside pools for waders this morning and picked up a scratchy song I simply did not recognize. The problem was that it was a 'thin' song from a hedgeline about 40 metres away on private land. I captured what I could on the mobile but the recording (attached) is very quiet as I...

Thanks Brian, that's the kind of candid advice I was after, cheers.

Pocket super zoom for record shots

129 views but no replies! Does that mean pocket superzooms are incapable of capturing birds in flight overhead?

Pocket super zoom for record shots

I have a DSLR with zoom lenses etc, so I know that will be better than anything in the pocket/bridge category. I am however a field birder and tend to travel light with my lovely Leica binoculars and that's it, but I would love to have a pocket camera to take record shots with (I'm thinking...

    Dartford Warbler - Cannock Chase

As a Staffordshire born birder now living in Leics I am always interested in the avifauna of my home county and was saddened to read this in the West Midland Bird Club newsletter no 482 The annual counts during 2005-14 document the arrival and ultimate loss of this species as a county breeding...

    Mist nets

People who use these to catch birds will know exactly what they are. What worries me is anyone buying them in all innocence to protect fruit trees etc thinking they will just stop birds. Without training most mortals will not be able to extract anything that gets in to a mist net without...

    Large Blue...Daneway Banks...

Hi Colin I went on Tuesday and saw 9. I also heard people talking about someone with a net. I'm obviously naive but I had no idea that's still going on. I guess the best protection at the banks is a regular procession of folks with cameras and if you see anyone with a net grab it and sling it in...

    Glossy Ibis

For all those like me who couldn't get to RW for the one and only Glossy Ibis so far one was reported just north of the county boundary today over Chilwell at 11:00. This is only 3 miles from Sawley Marina. Keep checking those flood meadows and livestock fields!
