    Two nests...no ID

Can anyone help me identify the birds nest and the other thing off to the side? It looks either fungal or maybe an insect nest of somekind. Found in a falling down old house in Powell County, KY.

    Backyard bird of prey kills

As I was viewing this page, a Cooper's Hawk grabbed one of the Mourning Doves at my feeder. The hawk lives here in the neighborhood and I see him pretty frequently. Red Tails don't stick around, but the Cooper's Hawk does. He will fly right into the cedars I've planted to roust a quick meal...

    Help with animal print ID

Found this track in Kentucky in late January. Looked through my books, but it really doesn't look like anything listed. Help, anyone?

    Less visits this year

I'm seeing my two regulars...a male and female ruby, but they are acting really squirrely about coming to the feeder. My sister, in Southern Ill is also seeing the same thing. I seem to have bugs. It was a cool and wet June.

Rate this spring's migration (In Michigan)

Well, here in Southwestern Michigan suburbia, we've HEARD of warblers, but I've never seen one. I guess that would be #7.

    A little advice needed...

I second the motion for water. I've used a plant tray. Keep it to 2 inches and I use a rock or two for perching. It's amazing to see who visits. Doesn't have to be fancy or expensive, just clean.

    Robins in trouble?

The egg I found today was almost whole, but I could see inside and there was an embryo in there. It's a jungle out there, I know.

    Robins in trouble?

I'm disturbed by a trend I've noticed in the last few weeks. A robin built a nest and laid eggs in one of our trees, but I found the nest on the ground with broken egg shells by it. Then I found a dead baby robin during one of our walks through the neighborhood. My sister, in Southern...

    Michigan spider ID

Found this near my roses. Shook some aphids into his or her web, but she was working on a juicy morsel she caught all by herself. No knowledge whatsoever about spiders. Any thoughts?

    Bird ID help please

Thanks to everyone who responded. Don't have the Sibley guide. Guess I need to make another trip to the bookstore!

    Frog Question

From what I can tell from my books, I think these guys are Green Frogs. The little one on the bottom is new to me...just showed up today, but the larger one on the top has been around for a few weeks (that I've noticed). I've read that they will hibernate in deep water. I live in Western...

    Bird ID help please

I live in Western Michigan and spotted this guy a couple of weeks ago. Searched my books, but can't id him. Any thoughts?

    What are you seeing now?

Beginning of August and I've seen my first Cedar Waxwing in our bath. Also either a Downy or Hairy woodpecker. Not my first, but the first I've seen scarfing down peanuts in the shell, and he hung around long enough to get pictures.

    What are you seeing now?

It's now the middle of July. I've got a female hummer that stops by every day and I hear her chittering, so maybe there is another one out there challenging her territory. Haven't seen the male. There are three feeders up, each out of the sightline of the others. Plus, natural food. I've got...

    Feeder Placement

All three of our feeders get some sun, with 2 getting quite a bit. I change the nectar every other day when it's over 80 degrees. If the nectar gets cloudy, I change it. If I can't remember the last time I changed it, I change it (which happens pretty often). I also make sure that I don't...

    American Toad Behavior

I've got the cutest little toad hanging out in my yard. I've read up on amphibians, but haven't seen my questions answered yet. So I'm hoping for a response here. How territorial are American Toads? Do they engage in protective behavior to keep other toads out? Do they return to an area...

    Hummer Behavior

A male hummer was perched on my feeder and having a drink. Then he twisted his neck up and around and bopped his whole body as if he heard some internal music. Then he'd drink again, and repeat. It was cooler yesterday, around 70ish. I wondered if he was doing this to warm himself? I've...

No humming birds in NE Ohio

Don't give up. Is your feeder red? Are you changing the nectar? Hummers are pretty bold, so I don't think the sound of the highway would keep them away. They just need time to find you. I hope you're finding out as much as you can about hummingbirds on this site...there are way more...

    What are you seeing now?

Saw a male hummer over the weekend. Yea! Mostly, though, it's been blackbirds of various types, sparrows, mourning doves and an occasional cardinal to brighten my day. Brown thrashers have disappeared. Bummer. I'm hoping they'll be back. Also hoping to see an oriole or two before they leave.

    Garden Pond

It's pretty amazing what you can do with very little water. The June issue of Birds & Blooms has an article on page 47 (with photos) of a water pond created with just a plastic barrel of water and some aquatic plants. She's got leopard frogs hanging out now! A barrel could easily be placed on...

    What are you seeing now?

Holy Moly! I'm in the GR area and still haven't seen a hummer. Got the feeders up, but no luck yet. We're in the burbs. This is the first year I've seen brown thrashers. I'm pretty sure a pair is nesting somewhere nearby. Are they common? This was also my first year to spot an Oriole...

    What are you seeing now?

It's the middle of May and I've seen brown thrashers, a Baltimore Oriole, cardinals, sparrows, mourning doves, redwing blackbirds, common grackles, crows, house finches, goldfinches, chickadees, robins, and a wild turkey. Has anyone seen any hummers yet?

    Today at the feeder

I'm so excited....we've got two Brown Thrashers hanging around our little "bird room". First time I've seen them. Another first...saw a Baltimore Oriole once and quickly put some orange slices out and of course, haven't seen him since. A robin is bathing, some mourning doves and sparrows are...

    Northern or Southern Cricket Frog?

You're quite welcome. Since seeing a toad in my yard this year, I've become curious about them and ended up buying a few books on the topic.

    Northern or Southern Cricket Frog?

Judging from your pic, I'd venture a guess as a Southern Cricket frog. My book says the following: It has a dark triangle between its eyes, a pointed head and long hind legs. The picture shows it as brownish. The Northern frog is depicted as greenish and the book says: Has a dark triangle...
