    May Moths

My first of the year and first for location found on a wall at work today in Littlehampton - Swallow Prominent

Various Raptors - South Essex UK - 12th May

Not personally getting the impression it's any longer-winged than a Honey-buzzard. Plus I know they're not the easiest photos to tell in, but I can just about make out 5 fingered primaries. I agree that the first photo is Marsh Harrier

    A few from Lima, Peru

Among more photos of Croaking Ground Dove and lots of Black Vultures, I've been sent this one. Can it be ID'd from the photo? I think I've got it down to Tropical or White-throated Kingbird, and of the two I was going with Tropical because it doesn't seem to show a dark eye-stripe?

    Scaup Type , Letham Fife

It's a hybrid with that massive black bill tip. Lesser Scaup have a tiny black nail there

Woolston Eyes, UK. 12th May 2024

    It's a female Marsh Harrier

River warbler or common grasshopper warbler?

As said above, it is definitely River Warbler. The "sewing machine" rhythm is a real giveaway is as far as locustella warblers in Europe go (whether there's a local bush- or tree-cricket that sounds similar is another matter!)

    Gull ID Sussex

Thanks again for taking the time to reply(y) In a couple of months time, I'll be trying to string (I mean see) juvenile Yellow-legged Gulls at the same location, and may well depend on yours and Alexander's input then too!

    Gull ID Sussex

Do you think it's possible that it's a subadult with adult-like plumage but some immaturity in bare parts as Alexander suggested? That was my first assumption too, but the head looked quite strangely small too. I was partly wondering whether there was Caspian influence too, but you've answered...

    Gull ID Sussex

Thanks Lou. I hadn't heard that about Herring Gulls. I know there's been a lot of Gannets with completely dark eyes, which are supposed to be the ones that have caught and survived avian flu. I guess it makes sence that the same could be true with other species of normally pale-eyed birds...

    A few from Lima, Peru

Another dove photo I've been sent by my Mum. Pretty confident this is a male Croaking Ground Dove unless I've overlooked something.

Ficedula flycat, today at Marrakesh, Morocco.

That one was a nominate Pied on DNA

Ficedula flycat, today at Marrakesh, Morocco.

    Possibly Iberian Pied Flycatcher still?

    Vancouver city May 2024 gull

Given primaries look a bit grey, probably "Olympic Gull" (Glaucous-winged x Western)?

    Eagle, Kolka Latvia today

Looks like Lesser Spotted to me, the bowed wings looks like it's just stalling in the wind?

    A few from Lima, Peru

More for general interest these ones, not any ID doubt, but Black Vultures (apparently of some cultural significance in Lima), and a Guayaquil Squirrel (according to Wiki they have a limited world distribution in SW Ecuador and NW Peru but are introduced in Lima).

    A few from Lima, Peru

Thanks again Butty - and yes, all taken in a pretty touristy part of Lima

    Brabant Netherlands - Warbler or...?

I'd lean towards Marsh if anything, given that it doesn't look rufous enough for Reed to me

Duck Species ID? Location: Three Lakes, Selby, North Yorkshire, England.

They're both domestic type ducks with some Mallard ancestry in them

    Aurora borealis/Northern Lights

There should really be a natural phenomena subforum, as you suggested on the other thread. Must be a fair few birders who find atmospheric and astronomical phenomena interesting.

    A few from Lima, Peru

Some more here from today... 1 and 4 Long-tailed Mockingbird? Not sure about the white tail tips on 4 though? 3 West Peruvian Dove again I presume 5 Tropical Mockingbird? 2 Scrub Blackbird or Unicoloured Blackbird?

    Brabant Netherlands - Warbler or...?

It's certainly a Reed or Marsh Warbler. I personally can't see enough in the photos to tell which though.

    Gull ID Sussex

Herring Gull argenteus would be the expected species. Taken early January in Sussex, UK. Couple of things seemed odd, the bill looks a bit long forward of the gonys, with the dark mark on it, the eye is pretty dark (appears to be an adult?), and the streaking on the head and neck seems quite...

    A few from Lima, Peru

Wasn't sure whether you edited your post or if I'd missed the parenthesis after the dove ID, but yeah I get now it's a split of what used to be considered the same species. Still waiting to hear back from my Mum about whether 5 is a different bird from 2. I'd thought the bill looked longer but...
