Switching to mirrorless from Canon D80 + 100-400 II

Hi All, the time has come for the switch to mirrorless - and I ask for your kind advice. My question is - how do i choose the "mirrorless analogue" of the body+lens system that I am using now? Currently I am using Canon D80 + 100-400 II, and I am fully satisfied with it - it offers the optimal...

The ebird update - How do you like it?..

Yep, exactly, so strange and frustrating :( Anybody knows whether there is an option to address this to ebird management? Perhaps this is something they could listen to?

The ebird update - How do you like it?..

Hi All, just wanted to ask people to share their opinions on the recent ebird update. From my side - really good to see people trying new things, but some matters do appear a bit odd to me: 1. Monthly records are prioritized over all-time records (it seems to me you cannot even select all-time...

    Lesser Redpoll? - Bulgaria, 17 Nov 2023

Dear All, pls kindly share your opinions on this Redpoll - captured and ringed at Branta Birding Lodge Ringing Site by Pavel Simeonov on 17 November. If this is a Lesser Redpoll, this would be one of the first records in the country - so Pavel has asked me to double-check on this forum. Further...

    Ecuador, Mindo & Antisana - August 2023

Dear All, Let me share some brief notes from my recent birding trip to Ecuador. This was my first birding trip to that country, and, indeed, my first birding in South America altogether. This was not a hardcore birding trip, but rather a mixture of a family and birding vacation – I was...

Unknown bird in Vratsa Mountains, Bulgaria - 08 Oct 2023

Dear All, I would be grateful for your opinions on what this could be - pics attached (very low quality, unfortunately). Two birds, thrush-sized, in high grass on a mountain meadow (1,300m elevation), flying very low above the grass for short-to-medium distances before disappearing back into...

    Night calling bird

Long-eared owl would be my first guess - their juvenile begging calls would typically be very conspicuous, often heard in residential areas and often attract attention of people . It would be good to hear the actual sound to make a conclusion, however :)

Yep, Plain Swift, Eduardo has confirmed as well. Thanks so much to all for your opinions!

    Pallid Swift? Tenerife, July 2022

Dear All, I have addressed this question to Eduardo Garcia del Rey, an expert ornithologist from Sociedad Ornitológica Canaria (I managed to obtain his contact details from Robert Burton, a birder permanently based on La Palma who runs a blog on La Palma birds). I will publish his opinion here...

2 Raptors on Tenerife, July 2022

Hi All, pls advise on these two raptors that i observed in the area of Erjos pools on Tenerife in mid-July 2022. I was actually there looking for the local Linnet subspecies and initially did not pay much attention to the two raptors circling above a mountaintop at a considerable distance from...

    Pallid Swift? Tenerife, July 2022

Thank you. Do I understand correctly that you would lean towards Plain Swift in this case?

    Pallid Swift? Tenerife, July 2022

Hi All, pls kindly advise - is that a Pallid Swift? Seen at Barranco de Ruiz on Tenerife, where normally only Plain and Pallid Swifts are present in summer - and this one certainly looked different from Plain Swifts (bigger, longer winged and the flight pattern 'more predictable", not erratic...

Tenerife (Canary Islands) Birding Trip Report – July 2022

One other good spot for Barolo, as i was told by the whale-watching boat captain, is the Garachico Rock. That rock is roughly 200-300 meters from the shore, and I understand Barolos were spotted flying near that rock on some evenings. I still opted in favor of Charco del Viento as my...

Tenerife (Canary Islands) Birding Trip Report – July 2022

Hi All, thank you very much for your kind feedback - very happy that the report looks good :) Quick comment on the Erjos spot for Bolle's, just to give people proper credit - I saw references to that spot in reports by several other birders, which basically led me to the idea to explore that...

Tenerife (Canary Islands) Birding Trip Report – July 2022

Hi All, let me a share a summary of my birding experience on Tenerife for several weeks in July 2022. Birding was not the main purpose of my trip, rather I wanted to take my wife and our parents and let them have a break from some of the difficulties we are facing back home. So I was mostly...

    2 birds near Madrid, 25 June 2022

Hi All, Pls kindly advise on these two birds that I saw near Valmojado, Madrid area. I was thinking that the first bird (pics 1-3) could perhaps be a juvenile Iberian magpie and the second bird (pics 4-5) could be a Western Orphean Warbler, but I am not sure. Thank you

Lesser White-fronted Goose? Ukraine, January 2022

Hi All, pls kindly have a look and let me know whether this could be good for a Lesser White-fronted Goose? Unfortunately, these are the only pictures I have. Taken last Monday while I was observing a flock of Red-breasted and White-fronted geese in South-eastern Ukraine. Lesser...
