Southern Michigan USA, blurry picture coming later...

I am at my aunt's house because I lost power. Me and my aunt were outside when a bird landed on the ground near her feeder. She saw it better than I did, but I declaired it a Horned Lark. We got a fuzzy photo of the bird with my cell phone, but because my phone is roaming and my aunt doesn't...

    Birding in an urban area

I am mostly used to birding in a rural area in the winter, or for one of my ornithology jobs I did birding in an urban park in spring/summer. I am finding however now that I live in an urban area, I am having a hard time in the winter. My apartment is next to a river and a few hundred ducks live...

    ID by song, Southern Michigan

I haven't been here for a while. I am still learning my bird songs basically. I heard today in tall grass near a very wet meadow (had some cattail and Swamp Milkweed growing in it) a bird song I didn't recognize. There where more than one in a small area in the grass somewhere. I tried to phish...

    Job search info

I don't know where to put this... I have a zoology degree and have had several seasonal jobs in education, animal care and field research... I'm crappy at all of them :( I'm too deep into the bird field to get out of it now and find a normal job. Anyway, I got the suggestion to try museum work...

Bare minimum for pretty good bird pictures

Yeah, I'm trying to take bird pictures with a 3x optical zoom point and shoot worth 90 bucks... Anyway, it's not working. I will start a new job soon for a few months and my first priority is to get a new laptop, but what is a good, cheap camera that I could use for some ID shots and stuff...

    (no picture) empidonax southern Michigan

I found an empidonax in a yard today in Southern Michigan. I wanted to know what was most likely. It was calling and it sounded most like a Yellow-bellied, but I wanted to make sure this was likely.

    Curious about Cowbirds

I was watching one of my favorite shows, NovaScienceNow, and they had a bit about Cowbirds retaliating when cowbird eggs are removed from Prothonotary nests by destorying the eggs that are left... I remember hearing about this behavior before... but never really thought about it much. My...

    Bird Tour Job Lists?

I'm looking for a job, and people have said I would make a great tour guide for birds. The problem is I can't seem to find these jobs on the web, is there a central listing somewhere, or should I start sending my resume to various companies?

    Angela's Lifelist

Edit, a much better list with the birds in IOC order can now be found on my blog: http://angnix.blogspot.com/2009/08/my-lifelist-of-birds-ioc-order-and.html I've only birded in a few states, but I did get to see a handful of out-of-range birds. I based this on an older field guide's order...

    In a rut

I need to get involved in some bird group or something. In the last few years I mainly birded for work, like in Ohio where I used to do Spot Map surveys, those were fun. But I haven't been around other birders in a long time in a non-job sense. Any good groups in the Battle Creek/Jackson area...

    Wisconsin Eyes

I took some fun photos when I was working up north. I don't have a zoom camera, but I got some nice up-close pictures while filming other people band. Anyway, I decided to do a twist, ID the bird with only the eye! They will get harder! Only 7 species in this quiz. First photo! Pretty easy to...

    Probably should have joined earlier

Well... I don't know what's wrong with me, but I think I joined a forum for every interest I have except birds so far lol. Basically I am trying to become an ornithologist or environmental educator. (sadly out of work now) I'm from Southern Michigan. I have worked for Penn State University...
