    Dago falls, Bandung

Been in Bandung for a month now and finally got a chance to get away from the city and into some nature today. The good news, Bandung, (Java) has a huge population of swifts, which can be seen at all times and in all areas. House sparrows extremely common too. Bats of at least half a dozen...

    Swallow at play?

Today while sitting by Kinghorn Loch I observed a swallow flying around with a feather in its mouth. Every thirty seconds or so the bird would drop the feather then twist and dive and catch it again. This was over the loch itself and the bird did not head towards the nest site to use the feather...

Uganda. Entebbe, Kampala, and Murchison Falls National Park

Hi to all. This will not be an exhaustive report containing detailed site info or long lists of birds seen, rather just a few impressions gained from a recent trip to Uganda in January this year. I flew with KLM from Edinburgh to Amsterdam, and then to Entebbe. Journey times were 90 minutes to...

    Dolphin surprise

Hi to all. I had an hour or so birding in Kinghorn harbour on the Fife coast of Scotland today, hoping to see some passage skuas. No joy on the skuas but most of the usual suspects around, sandwich tern, guilliemot, fulmar, and eider close to shore, with some fishing gannets further out and...

Hi there. I hope to take a trip to Killiecrankie in a couple of weeks time. Does anyone know if pied flycatcher, redstart and wood warbler are still possible in this reserve? Also, I plan to take the road from Pitlochry, past Ben Vrackie and Moulin to Dunkeld. I gave never taken this route...

    birds feast on flying ants

Hi to all. Have just been standing on my porch in Kinghorn, on the Fife coast of Scotland, and got covered in what look like flying ants. Above my house was a flock of black headed gulls and starlings, all hawking the ants in flight like bee eaters would. I have never before observed either of...

Hi to all. Hope this isn't too similar to the previous thread. I will be visiting Orlando with the family in mid October, based at the Westgate Lakes Resorts. Puffin / tern interraction

Hi. Today I spent an hour or so birding the coast at Kinghorn in Fife, Scotland. Offshore were many sandwich and common terns fishing the bays. For the most part they were just patrolling around, diving and catching a sand eel every now and then. However, they then all congregated in a very...

    Grebes, fulmar, dolphins and swifts

Hi. Last night I finished work and got home to my hometown of Kinghorn in Fife and headed out for a walk about 5pm. First I went to Kinghorn loch and was delighted to see a great crested grebe was sitting on a very late nest right in front of the hide. The bird was on at least two large pure...

    most startling bird behaviour

Last Sunday, at Kinghorn Loch in Fife in Scotland, I witnessed two adult coots murder their own chick by pecking it to death. Never thought I would see the like of it. I'd be interested to hear about the most unexpected/shocking/ or just plain amazing bird behaviour that other members have...

    Murderous coots

Another soul crushing day in the office in Edinburgh, staring at the computer, enlivened just now by the sight of dozens of swifts hawking for insects at eye level from the office window. Yesterday, on a visit to Kinghorn Loch, was sad to see some disturbing behaviour from the local coots. A...

Walking through Edinburgh's Holyrood Park on way to work at 8.15 am this morning when all of a sudden the hundreds of black headed and herring gulls loafing on the football field took flight together. Beautiful peregrine arching across the sky on way to Salisbury crags. Second sighting in as...
