    Red-cockaded Woodpeckers near Orlando

Hi I'm going to Orlando (Disney of course) in April with the family, but will have a morning to go birding. I've been looking at sites within a reasonable distance for Red-cockaded Woodpeckers and it seems there are 3 main options: - Hal Scott Regional Preserve - Disney Wilderness Preserve -...

    Notes from vacations in Mexico

Over the past couple of years I've been to Mexico 3 times on family vacations, twice to Yucatan and once to Puerto Vallarta on the Pacific coast. The emphasis has always been on the family, but I try and choose resorts where the is also some reasonable habitat within walking distance (google...

    Marvellous Spatuletail display filmed

This is amazing footage. I was fortunate enough to see these little gems in peru last year. http://news.bbc.co.uk/earth/hi/earth_news/newsid_8338000/8338728.stm

    North West Peru

I have just returned from a 7 day trip to Northern Peru from Chiclayo to Tarapoto with Renzo Zeppilli of Manu Expiditions. We saw over 340 species in one week, including White-Winged Guan, Marvelous Spatuletail (including an adult male), Peruvian Plantcutter, both Elegant and Maranon...

    Looking for Owls

Having just moved from London to Toronto, I'm still at the point where every time I go out birding I find at least one lifer. Today I went out looking for owls. After two months in Toronto I've already seen Horned, Snowy, Hawk and Boreal (Tengmalm's). And today I found Long-Eared, which I've...

    shrike, namibia

I posted this on the ID forum, but maybe someone here can recongnise this shrike. It has been suggested that it could be a fiscal shrike or a brubru? I am not sure. It looks a bit like a woodchat shrike but that would be out of its normal range.

    Shrike, Namibia

Hello This looks like a Woodchat Shrike to me. However I took this in Namibia last week and, according to my guidebook, Woodchats do not venture this far south. Is it something else?

    Thursley Common

When I was a teenager, growing up in Woking, this was may favourite place, and I would cycle for hours to get here. Yesterday I went back for the first time in ages. After the recent fire I feared the worst, but actually, I had a great day. In the late 1980s, when I started going here, I...

    Florida Warbler (or Vireo)

This is actually an old photo taken in Florida in November. I had always assumed it was a blue-headed vireo, but today I realised that it probably isn't. But what is it?

    Rainham Marsh in Spring

I spent a couple of hours at Rainham Marsh yesterday. Migrants were out in force with several Swallows and plenty of warblers. Ciffchaffs and Blackcaps were conspicious, but I also had the best views I have ever had of Cetti's warbler. I often hear them but rarely see them at Rainham, but...

    Badgers bad for birds?

There was an article in Private Eye recently that suggested that rise in Badger numbers was having an adverse effect on ground nesting bird numbers. In partciular they suggested that Stone Curlews and Lapwings were being badly affected. They also suggested that the RSPB was aware of this issue...

    Mumbai - Elephanta Island

I had a spare day tagged onto the end of a business trip to India, which had finished in Mumbai. I had thought about going to Sanjay Ghandi National Park in the north of the city but my hotel was in the south next to the Gateway to India, and the long, hot, tedious journey from the airport in...

    A day in Mumbai

Hello I'll be in Mumbia on a business trip in a couple of weeks and have a free day at the end. Are then any good places in or near Mumbia where I could spend the day birding? One place that caught my eye was the Sanjay Gandhi National Park, but I don't know much about it. Thanks.

    Thailand in December

Is December a good time to visit Thailand? I have heard mixed reports. I think the weather is OK, at least in the north, but I'm not sure how many migrant birds are around.

    Capel Fleet

Made my first visit to this raptor viewpoint on Isle of Sheppy yesterday. It was cold and windswept but actually quite a nice, clear sky. There where quite a few Red-legged Partridge wandering around, and good numbers of Corn Bunting and Fieldfare. In terms of Raptors, there were lots of...

    Peru Trip

Here are a few snippits from my recent trip to peru. This was not a pure birding holiday, but its impossible not to see a lot of birds in Peru. I still have not got round to counting everything but I think I saw about 200 lifers (I have been to south america before but not peru). The first 4...

    Peru Lodges

I'm going to peru in December with my girlfried (who is peruvian - the ideal birders girlfriend). We're going to Puerto Maldonado and want to stay a few nights in a jungle lodge. Can anyone recommed a good one - there seem to be quite a few there. Some of them seem to organise every minute of...

    Santa Barbara and Chicago

Not actually a vacation, this was a business trip, but I managed to do a few hours birding in santa barbara (in the botanic gardens and around the Bacara resort) while at a conference, and then an afternoon in Chicago (around Montrose bay on the Saturday). Nevertheless managed to see plenty of...

    Birding in Santa Barbara

I'm going to Santa Barbara in a week or so (for work) but I will have a little bit of spare time. Any suggestions on good birding locations nearby? I have been birding in Canada before but not in Southern California so a lot of the birds will be new to me.

    Help with American Flycatcher

Hello I took these photos of an empid flycatcher near Banff in June. Any idea what it might be? And also, I've included a picture of what I think might be a Hermit Thrush, but I'm really not sure. This was taken near the top of Bow Summit.
