K-5

Top-of-the-range silent High-ISO Semi-Pro
Manufacturer
Pentax

Item details

The K-5 is fully a pro-style DSLR, top-of-the-range at Pentax, which means it is has a durable, rain-proof body, made mostly out of magnesium. At a distance there is nothing that differs it from the K-7, but the K-5 logo, and a button, or two.

It has a 16+MP CMOS sensor from Sony (actually the same as you can find in the Sony A55), which gives the camera an astounding ISO range - expanded: 80-51400 (or basic setting: 100-12800).

Independent test organisations have put it on par with the Nikon D700, which is praise indeed, as the D700 is a full-format camera.

Plastic pentax. Pentax lost their way, I remember the Spotmatic, Me, LXand super, when though Nikon and Canon introduced the 10D and Nikon the D100, up to even now Pentax have the silver plastic cheap looking DSLRs.

But what of the KR, K7, RX, the K5 is ok, however like it or not design and asthetics count for a lot these days and Pentax are lagging, Canon and Nikon "look the part" Pentax looks 5 years out of date, but for the price I will stay with Canon and Nikon.

Shame as the K5 is indeed a very good camers.

Pros
  • High ISO IQ, mostly inline/better vs CaNikons but lighter, smaller, tough
Cons
  • AF features could be improved further
The K5 is a wonderful improvement over the K7. Especially in IQ at high ISO it's best in class in crop cam's together with Nikon's D7000 that seems to have a very similar sensor setup. Still looking sometimes to Canon 7D's AF features... there is still "room for improvement" for Pentax, e.g. AF manual selection of fields on other than DA-lenses. But this is very small wishlist item for the future ;-)
Almost all of my fotos are shot with Pentax:

Am using Sigma 300 2.8 plus 1.4 TC, DA*300 plus 1.5 TC or most recently the new "Bigma" 50-500 that shows also nice improvement over the long lasting evergreen...
