Identification
14 cm. A tiny Owl.
- Grey-brown crown and sides of face, spotted white
- Nape with prominent false eyes and concealed white nuchal collar
- Dark brown upperparts from mantle to rump
- Dark brown scapulars and upperwing-coverts, boldly spotted white and with dull olive-rufous wash to outer edges of wing-coverts and secondaries
- Dark brown primaries and secondaries with conspicuous, irregularly shaped white spots
- Very short blackish tail with five incomplete white bands
- White underparts from chin to undertail-coverts, throat feathers tipped dark brown, and sides of chest medium brown
- Broad, ill-defined, dull brownish olive-rufous streaks on lower chest, flanks and belly
Juveniles undescribed.
Distribution
Eastern slope of the Andes of Ecuador, Peru and extreme northern Bolivia. It is unknown if this species also reach into Colombia
Uncommon and easily overlooked.
Taxonomy
This is a monotypic species.
Habitat
Moist montane forests including cloud forest. Probably restricted on outlying ridges.
Occurs at 1450 to 1975 m asl.
Behaviour
Diet
Not well known. Feeds probably on large insects, small lizards and small birds.
Breeding
No information.
Movements
Probably a resident species.
Vocalizations
A three note song.
