Sladen's Barbet - BirdForum Opus

Identification

17cm.

  • Dark brown plumage
  • Bare face
  • Pale tufts about bill
  • Grey to brownish throat
  • Blackish bill

Sexes similar. Immatures have a paler bill, some feathers on head, darker tufts and are paler below.

Similar species

Grey-throated Barbet has no bare head and a more streaky appearance, Bristle-nosed Barbet is paler, more streaked, smaller and has a paler bill.

Distribution

Found in central and eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo. Also reported from southwestern Central African Republic.
A poorly known species, often confused with Grey-throated Barbet. Status unclear, uncommon at best, probably rare.

Taxonomy

This is a monotypic species.
Forms a superspecies with Bristle-nosed Barbet and is also closely related to Naked-faced Barbet.

Habitat

Forests, including gallery forest. Forest, including gallery forest, often together with G. bonapartei, but details lacking.

Behaviour

Poorly known, often seen together with Grey-throated Barbet.

Diet

Feeds on fruits. Takes also insects.
Forages in groups of 5 to 15 birds, sometimes more.

Breeding

Breeding season probably from January to September. Nests and eggs unknown, nests probably within colonies of Grey-throated Barbet.

Movements

A sedentary species. Sedentary.
