Identification

Large chachalaca (62-67 cm) having dull brown plumage with chestnut belly and tail tips. Largely reddish bare facial skin. Has a prominent "fan" of upright forehead feathers.

Similar species

Similar to West Mexican Chachalaca but with entire belly and tail tips chestnut. The forehead feathers of that species are far shorter.

Distribution

North America: endemic to semi-arid north-western Mexico (Sonora to Jalisco).

Taxonomy

This is a monotypic species[1].

Habitat

Forests and scrubby areas incuding cultivated land

Behaviour

Diet

Their diet includes fruit, particularly papayas.
