Arborophila hyperythra

Identification

25–27 cm (9¾-10½ in)

  • Black and white pattern on flanks
  • Black crown and nape, streaked with brown
  • Chestnut eyebrow and cheeks
  • Brown upperparts barred black
  • Black marks on tertials
  • Cinnamon breast
  • White vent
  • Brown iris
  • Grey bill
  • Crimson bare eye-ring skin

Pinkish feet
Female has browner, smaller white spots.

Distribution

Endemic to Borneo

Taxonomy

Subspecies

There are 2 subspecies[1]:

  • A. h. hyperythra:
  • Montane forests of north-central Borneo
  • A. h. erythrophrys:
  • Mount Kinabalu (northern Borneo)

Vocalisation

Voice: A repeated, ringing, rising note kuwar.
