- Pharomachrus pavoninus
Identification
33-34 cm
Male
- Metallic emerald or golden green head, upperparts including uppertail coverts longer than the tail (some sources mention reflections of head sometimes being coppery red)
- Underparts include emerald green upper breast, scarlet lower breast and belly with a black undertail (there is no white separation of green and red)
- The bill is orange-red becoming yellow on the tip.
Female
- Similar but with less glossy head and shorter uppertail coverts (reaching to but not beyond the tip of the tail)
- Three part underside, from front to rear with golden-green, glossy olive-green, and salmon-orange
- Undertail with white tips on black feathers
- Bill and feet horn.
Distribution
Amazon Basin.
Taxonomy
This is a monotypic species[1].
Habitat
Lowland forest.
Behaviour
May join mixed species flocks.
