Identification

30 cm

  • Bright green upperparts
  • Dark brown crown
  • Mottled nape
  • Dark red lores
  • Green cheeks
  • Bright blue gorget
  • Dark green underparts
  • Large, red belly patch
  • Blue outer primaries
  • Red shoulder patch
  • Yellow and green tail
  • Dark bill

Immature: duller with less red

Distribution

South America: found in the lowlands of south-eastern Brazil (Bahia to Rio de Janeiro).

Taxonomy

This is a monotypic species[1].

Habitat

Canopy of lowland Atlantic Forest.

Behaviour

Diet

The diet includes seeds and fruit.

Breeding

They nest in tree cavities; the clutch consisting of 2-4 eggs.
