Subspecies
Seven subspecies are recognized[1].
- O. m. morotensis:
- Northern Moluccas (Morotai and Ternate)
- O. m. leucospilus:
- Northern Moluccas (Halmahera, Kasiruta and Bacan)
- O. m. obira:
- Obi Island (central Moluccas)
- O. m. magicus:
- Southern Moluccas (Seram and Ambon)
- O. m. bouruensis:
- Buru (southern Moluccas)
- O. m. albiventris:
- Lesser Sundas (Sumbawa, Flores, Besar, Lomblen)
- O. m. kalidupae:
- Kaledupa Island (Tukangbesi Islands)
The birds in Kaledupa Island were formerly included in Sulawesi Scops Owl.
