Identification

~38 cm. Head and underparts are red. Most races have green wings and an orange-red upper mandible, but ssp. hypophonius (from Halmahera) has blue wings and ssp. buruensis has an all-black bill.

Moluccas, Sula Island, and New Guinea

  • A. a. sulaensis on Sula Islands (Taliabu, Seho and Mangole)
  • A. a. versicolor on Peleng I. (Banggai Islands)
  • A. a. buruensis on Buru (s Moluccas)
  • A. a. amboinensis on S Moluccas (Boano, Ambon and Seram)
  • A. a. dorsalis on W Papuan islands and nw New Guinea
