Mindanao Lorikeet - BirdForum Opus

Identification

20 cm.

  • Reddish orange bill
  • Red front of head from forecrown to chin and anterior ear-coverts, scaled yellow
  • Red shading to green scalled yellow on rest of crown and face
  • Purplish black line from lores through eye and to nape
  • Yellow underparts broadly scaled green
  • Green upperparts
  • Tail dusky yellowish below, green above

Sexes similar. Immatures have less red on face, white orbital skin and a darker bill.

Distribution

Endemic to central Mindano in the southeastern Philippines.
A restricted-range species, uncommon in its small range.

Taxonomy

This is a monotypic species[1].

Habitat

Found in montane forest and forest edge.
Occurs above 1000 m.

Behaviour

Diet

Recorded to take nectar from trees with scarlet blossoms. No other information.

Breeding

Presumed breeding season from March to May. Lays 2 eggs in captivity. No other information from the wild.

Movements

Downslope flights in the evening to roosting areas with return each morning to higher elevation for foraging noted.
