Identification
14 cm.
Male
- Green plumage
- Pale brownish head with yellow mottling
- Brownish throat merging into green on breast
- Red undertail-coverts
- Barred rump
Female
- Greenish head
- Crown to back and rump black-and-green barred with reddish undertone on nape
Immatures like female. huonensis with more yellow on crown and female lacking orange on nape, hallstromi male darker and female brighter than nominate, major is slightly larger.
Similar species
Very similar to Modest Tiger Parrot but note paler head and yellow marks on lower face. Also yellow mottling of nape never formes a collar.
Distribution
Endemic to the mountains of New Guinea.
Uncommon in its range, regularly recorded below Tari Gap, Papua New Guinea.
Taxonomy
Four subspecies recognized:
- P. m. major in west New Guinea (Weyland Mountains and northern slope of Snow Mountains)
- P. m. hallstromi in the central Highlands and Hindenburg Range of New Guinea
- P. m. huonensis in northeast New Guinea (mountains of Huon Peninsula)
- P. m. madaraszi in the mountains of southeast New Guinea
Habitat
Montane forest, forest edge and secondary growth.
Occurs mainly from 1150 to 2500 m.
Behaviour
Diet
Feeds on fruits, seeds, berries and leaf pulp. Seen feeding at the base of arboreal ant plants.
Breeding
Birds in breeding condition recorded in June and September. No other information.
