Identifying streaked and "kiskadee" flycatchers - BirdForum Opus

Introduction

This page gives identification advice for the "streaked" and "kiskadee" flycatchers of the New World. The species in each group broadly resemble each other. Piratic Flycatcher acts as a bridge between the two with some features of each. As ever, voice is the best guide.

"Streaked" flycatchers

Sulphur-bellied and Streaked Flycatchers are extremely similar (see table).

In comparison with the "streaked" flycatchers, Piratic Flycatcher:

  • around 5 cm smaller (about 20%: "small")
  • small all-dark bill
  • upperparts are plain greyish brown rather than strongly patterned
  • supercilium is strongly white and extends to meet behind the head
  • malar insignificant.
