Hainan Peacock-Pheasant - BirdForum Opus

Identification

Male 53–65 cm (20¾-25½ in); female 40–45 cm (15¾-17¾ in)
Male

  • Dark brown head and neck with thin buff barring
  • Elongated forecrown feathers

Distribution

Endemic to Hainan, south China.

Taxonomy

This is a monotypic species.
Formerly considered conspecific with Grey Peacock-Pheasant.

Habitat

Dense broadleaved evergreen forest and secondary forests.

Behaviour

Diet

Their varied diet consists of berries, fruits, seeds, figs, grubs and ants,.

Breeding

They display by erecting the small crest, fanning out his wings and tail, showing the female his Ocelli in all their glory.
