Identification
13 - 14cm (5-5½ in); a small Babbler:
- Rufescent crown
- Pale rufous-ruff breast
- Greyish lores and ear-coverts
- Buffy-brown upperparts
- Iris pale yellow
- Black bill
Sexes similar, juveniles undescribed.
Distribution
An Indonesian endemic, only found on Java. Restricted-range species but fairly common in some protected areas.
Taxonomy
This is a monotypic species[1].
Kangean Tit-Babbler was formerly included in this species.
A former subspecies, javanicus, is now considered a synonym of flavicollis.
Habitat
Dense lower to middle storey of open forest and secondary growth. Found in the lowlands.
Behaviour
Diet
Feeds on black beetle eggs and insects.
Usually seen in small groups, foraging methodically through tangled vegetation.
Breeding
Breeding season February and April in west Java. The nest is a hollow ball, made of vegetable matter and placed close to the ground. Lays 2 eggs. Brood parasitism by Square-tailed Drongo-Cuckoo reported.
