Aulacorhynchus haematopygus

Identification

Length 35cm, with huge (6.5-7.5cm) bill typical of toucan family.
Brilliant green overall colour, with bands of blue on underside. Bill dark reddish-brown with white ring around base. Rump is scarlet red.

Distribution

South America: found in Colombia, Ecuador, and Venezuela. Its naturally Common on western slope of Andes between 500m. and 2000m. in elevation.

Taxonomy

Two subspecies are recognized^[1]:

• A. h. sexnotatus:

• Extreme south-western Colombia (Nariño) and Andes of western Ecuador

• A. h. haematopygus'':

• Andes of Colombia and Sierra de Perijá  (western Venezuela)

Habitat

Canopy and borders of foothill and subtropical forest, woodlands, and clearings. Also road sides and gardens.

Behaviour

Diet

Tame and tolerant of disturbance. Gathers fruit from bushes and trees in its large bill, and swallows it whole by tilting head back and tossing into throat.
