Identification

12–13 cm (4¾-5 in)

  • Green overall plumage
  • Underparts slightly yellower
  • Horn bill (sometimes with pinkish wash)
  • Brown iris

Male

  • Blue just visible at the bend of the closed wing, on upperside of primaries and secondaries and under-wing coverts of the open wing, lower back, and rump

Female: all green, yellow tinge on head and flanks

South America: Bolivia (and south-eastern Peru?) east to north-eastern Brazil, and south to Paraguay and north-eastern Argentina.

Taxonomy

This is a monotypic species[1].

Formerly included in Blue-winged Parrotlet together with Turquoise-winged Parrotlet and Riparian Parrotlet.

Ideal habitat seems to be riverine thickets and borders of rainforest and second growth, but also found in city parks, open woods, savanna, semi-open and shrubby areas.

Behaviour

Breeding

They nest in tree holes or use nests from other species, such as Rufous Hornero. There is little extra information available.

Diet

Their diet consists mainly of fruits, seeds, grass seeds and catkins.
